Static vs. dynamic QR codes: what changes after printing?

By QRNest editorial · Updated October 26, 2026

What a static code stores

A static code contains the final content, such as a web address or Wi-Fi credentials. The scanning device reads that data directly. You can generate it without maintaining a redirect service, but you cannot edit the data inside the printed pattern.

How dynamic codes work

A dynamic code usually contains a short redirect address managed by a service. That service decides where the visitor goes. Editing the destination changes the redirect, not the printed image. This can support analytics, but depends on the service remaining available and on any applicable plan limits.

Choose based on maintenance

For an unchanging website, contact card, or guest-network card, a static code is often sufficient. For a campaign whose destination changes repeatedly, a managed redirect may be useful. Review the provider’s privacy practices and what happens when a paid plan ends.

What QRNest provides

QRNest generates static codes. It does not offer redirect management, scan tracking, or editable printed codes. A static URL code can keep pointing to the same address while you update the content on that page, as long as you control and maintain that address.
