QR code not scanning? Check these six things first
By QRNest editorial · Updated October 26, 2026
Check focus and lighting
Clean the camera lens, hold the phone steady, and use even light. Move farther away if the camera cannot focus close up. Reflections from glossy paper can obscure modules; changing the viewing angle may help.
Check contrast and quiet space
Use dark modules on a light background and remove nearby artwork touching the code. Cameras need to distinguish the pattern from the page. Inverted codes and low contrast colors may work on some devices and fail on others.
Check the original export
A screenshot, social media recompression, or resized image can blur small modules. Return to the original PNG at a suitable resolution, or use SVG for print. Avoid sending a tiny thumbnail to a printer.
Reduce the encoded content
Long payloads create denser patterns. Use a clean direct URL when possible and remove unnecessary text. Do not shorten a link through a service you do not trust merely to make the code smaller.
Remove decorative obstacles
A large center logo or an overly stylized pattern can hide too much information. Try a plain code first. If the plain version works, reintroduce customization gradually and test each export.
Separate scanning from destination problems
If the camera reads the code but the page fails to load, the issue may be the URL, network connection, or website permissions. Open the encoded address manually. A code can scan correctly even when its linked page is unavailable.
